How to use a chromatic tuner

A chromatic tuner visualises the pitch of notes you are playing, showing you the note letter and relative intonation (if the pitch is high or low).

If you click 'start' on the tool and play a note on your instrument, it will display the letter and octave number of the note you're playing in the top left corner. In Western music, each octave is split into 12 equally spaced semitones, which are typically named C, C♯, D and so on.

The pitch distance from one semitone to the next, like from C to C♯, is split into 100 smaller units called 'cents'. If you play a C note that is perfectly in tune, the tuner will show zero cents. A C note that is 50 cents sharp is halfway between C and C♯.

To see and hear how the notes on your instrument relate to cents on the tuner, try fingering one of the low notes on your instrument and ramp your blowing preassure from low to high. You will notice that the needle moves from right to left, and the 'cents' number increases. At some point, the tuner will wrap from one note name to the one following it.

As you use the tuner, the goal is to control your breath so that the needle remains in the centre. The article Playing the ocarina in tune includes many more tips.
