A fourth is when you see notes that are 3 staff positions apart:

Fourths show up in various places in music, but the most common is as part of an arpeggio. If you take the first 3 notes of the C arpeggio (C E G), and follow with the C one octave higher, the interval between G and high C is a fourth:
