My contribution for Anzac Day, April 25. There is one song about it that almost all Australians and all British folkies know. It is very long and dull and this isn't it. It's ahort, anonymous Turkish song written very close to the time of the battle. There are many versions of it - I first heard it sung by Ruhi Su, and his version is on many places on the web, mostly defaced by militarist imagery he would have hated.
It's a monologue addressed to his mother by a soldier who was shot and dumped in a grave while still alive.
The way it's usually done is as a continuous melody on the saz, with the vocals as an episodic unison. No chords. The scale is sorta dorian but with the second slightly flattened. Fits either a G or D 10-hole. Might work on some harmony doubles to hint at the saz texture.
I'm including two slightly different transcriptions.
